RUNNING in larger groups has such amazing advantages. Not only can you venture into new areas to run and explore and be safer by your numbers, but there is always a very interesting and most of the time amusing story being told.
Believe it or not, some runners can actually run and have plenty of breath to belt out the funniest of tales.
The best part, for me though, is that if you start out and you get caught up with a group that are way faster and fitter than yourself you simply back off and get picked up by the next group of runners, called a bus.
Once you are in a bus that’s more suited to your pace you too will be able to get involved in the odd banter instead of trying to catch your breath while the mileage you cover just seems to dissipate in a flash, which is exactly what you might require while out training for your set goals.
I experienced this sensation last Sunday when club members got together to run a 21km. Mind you, some of these runners went on and completed 35km (show offs).
This weekend will be pretty much the same but with a hint of an added motivation.
The South Coast Striders are hosting their annual 21km club championship challenge and runners are gathering at the clubhouse at 5am this Sunday and heading for Impenjati Nature Reserve where a breakfast braai will be held.
Please trust me when I say this, but on race day the buses are a lot smaller and a lot less chirpy. That’s because the pace is a lot quicker and let’s face it, it is the club championship after all.
The walking section of Striders will be meeting at 5am on the same Sunday morning but will be starting at Impenjati and will be doing a 15km walk.
I would like to wish everyone taking part in this event all the very best. Keep safe on the roads and remember, every stride counts.
Urgent reminder that South Coast Striders will be holding its AGM tonight (20th) at 6pm. All members are urged to attend in order to elect a new committee.
