Wayne’s World: From guilt to rage…

Please stay safe on the roads and remember every stride counts.

THE family and I bundled ourselves into the car last Monday and headed off to Durban with the exciting prospect of sharing delicious chocolate eggs with our extended families.

It wasn’t too long into our travels when a feeling of guilt reached inside my heart as I saw a couple of runners pushing themselves up the hill towards South City church.

I have been off with a bad bout of ‘flu the whole week and have been unable to train. Even though not being able to run its always advisable to listen to your body.

Symptoms like ‘flu can and do weaken your heart and, with excessive exercising, the risk of creating further problems, like a heart attack, increases.

Don’t be disheartened if you get ill as a week or two off will actually benefit you in the long run.

I turned onto the N2 freeway towards Durban and it was not long before my feeling of guilt turned to anger. I counted five runners in a stretch of 1km on the freeway.

It infuriates me to see such idiotic acts of selfishness when people like this have total disregard for the law and their own and other people’s safety.

The one couple was running side-by-side with the outer one being in the slow lane of traffic. It could have been a very different case had I been blinded by a big truck … I would not have seen this runner and it could have ended in tragedy.

On a more exciting note, the South Coast Striders are about to embark on the most exciting race prospects in recent history as we tackle this weekend’s Dick King half marathon.

The full ‘A Team’ of the green and orange machine will be spearheaded by the likes of Michael Mzobe, Goodman Nqayi, Albert Nyembezi, Eric Ndovela, Sinovuyo Ncasa, Londile Jonose, and joined by at least 50 other runners and walkers from the club.

Michael is not only the current champion of this race but has retained the title for the last four years.

He informs me that he intends to not only take the crown again this year but to drag a further 10 Striders to fill the top 20 positions.

He’s also requested Michelle Wridgway stand at the 1km mark with a camera armed and ready as he brings at least 20 Striders through, leading the field of 1000 competitors.

We hope to bring you some awesome pictures and results on this event next week.
