PREPARATIONS for the Hibiscus Coast Marathon, being held on April 27, are well under way and the race committee is promising to host an amazing event.
South Coast Striders is the host club.
The route is full of variety, with scenery ranging from a loop through Gamalahke along the sugar cane fields, to Shelly Beach and on through Margate and Ramsgate (with sea views) before finishing off at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.
There are three distances: 10km, 24km or 48km.
The 48km event is one of the last Comrade’s Marathon qualifying races on the calendar and so we are hoping to draw a large number of runners wishing to have a go at qualifying.
On that note, I would like to introduce you to a few more local club members that will be lining up at the start line of this year’s Comrades Ultra Marathon.
Donnovan Mulder (58) ran his first Comrades in 1998 at the age of 40. He has 17 medals under his belt – nine bronze and eight Vic Claphams. His fastest time is 9:56:19.
Eric Mqadi (39) will be running for his tenth medal. He ran his first comrades in 2004 at the age of 27 and has six Bill Rowan medals and three bronze medals.
His fastest time is 7:53:32 and once he completes his 10th he will receive his permanent number.
Mavela Albert Nyembezi (37) ran his first Comrades in 2008 at the age of 29. He boasts one silver medal and five Bill Rowans.
He is hoping to receive his second silver medal this year. His fastest time is 7:26:59.
Alongside all this experience we have quite a few novice runners who are attempting to bring home their first Comrades medal to start off their addictive collection.
They are Muzi Michael Mzobe (27), Wiseman Gqwele (32), Dylan Bense (24), Freek Stander (44), Terry Naidoo (33). Reshen Sookooram (33).
