DEAR Editor,-
The DA welcomed the announcement during the KZN Community Safety Budget Debate, of an amendment to the KZN Liquor Licensing Act, in terms of public drinking. The adjustment is to be driven through the province’s Economic Development and Tourism portfolio committee.
Public drinking has been a problem in KZN since the act was silent on this matter. The DA has been lobbying hard for the closing of this loophole. Drinking in public places can be the source of violent and anti-social behaviour, as well as creating a disturbance to residents.
The amendment means that, at last, SAPS will be empowered to control and restrict illegal behaviour related to drinking in public. The reality is that the wheel turns very slowly in government.
However, the DA is committed to pressuring the department to have the amendment tabled in the shortest possible time.
