OPINION: ‘Recycling depot saga is a crying shame’

It is with great sadness that I now have to throw all plastic containers and glass bottles into the rubbish bin.

DEAR Editor,-

It is a great pity that some Ramsgate residents do not appreciate how important recycling is. We had a site all set up in Glenmarkie Street, but some irresponsible idiots brought their domestic rubbish for dumping at the site, including items that cannot be recycled. Unfortunately the bins provided were not large enough to cope with the volume and the council did not uphold its agreement to clear the site weekly, so it ended up as an unsightly unhygienic tip.

The council, in its infinite wisdom, then closed the site. So it is with great sadness that I now have to throw all plastic containers and glass bottles into the rubbish bin, which is carted off to Oatlands landfill site and will add to the unmanageable pollution at the site. Glass and plastic do not degrade like paper and cardboard. Australia and America have separate recycling bins at their homes. It’s just a pipe dream that it could happen in South Africa.
