DEAR Editor,-
After having lost my husband of 47 years five years ago, I relocated to live with my family in Johannesburg. Every year I return to Margate to visit old friends, but mainly to visit and take care of my late husband’s grave, where I spend precious moments reflecting on the life we had together.
Although I did notice a depreciation of the cemetery area over the years, I was recently shocked, disgusted and completely disappointed by the deterioration and lack of maintenance and control by the municipality.
Quarry Road, being the access road, is in an extremely bad condition. Neighbouring informal settlement residents dump their rubbish at the roadside and there is evidence that the road is being used as a toilet.
Illegal electrical cables are blatantly laid across the road and the entrance has become a meeting place for all and sundry, which deters people from visiting the cemetery.
There is an urgent need for a fence between the informal settlement, the access road to the cemetery and to some residential properties in the area.
Perhaps the municipality can look into this matter urgently?
