DEAR Editor,-
If the KZN Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing is ‘unaware’ of illegal fishing activities off our shores (Trawlers spotted offshore, SCH May 13), then it is not doing its job (no surprise there). Or it is complicit in the furtive nocturnal activities of the Chinese trawlers? Of course the department knows what is going on – it is just not admitting it.
What is so shameful is that whoever is responsible is quite prepared to sell off the resources they are sworn to protect, as well as their own people, in order fill their pockets.
But there again, we should be used to that by now. Our leadership is engaged in an epic feeding frenzy of blatant thievery, so why shouldn’t the minnows of the department have their chance at the bait balls as well?
Sardine runs boost tourism and help to feed the many people who flock to the beaches to catch what they can. Those days are gone – like so many other things that made South Africa a good place to live.
