HOMEGROWN movie ‘mogul’ Senzo Zindela must be rubbing his hands with glee.
Hlaudi Motsoeneng, SABC’s COO – chief operating officer – (not to be confused with a well known brand of baked beans) has announced that the public ‘boredcaster’ will flight more and more local content from now on.
What a brilliant opportunity for the South African entertainment industry. Who knows, after South Coaster Senzo’s recent return from Cannes, we could soon be seeing much of his material on SABC 1, 2 and 3.
Go for it, Senzo!
What we really need is some great blockbuster that will keep us glued to the screen. Perhaps a local version of America’s House of Cards.
We can call it ‘House of Retards’.
Kevin Spacey plays the part of scheming American President Frank Underwood and his wife and running mate, Claire, by the lovely Robin Wright.
South Africa also has one president, so there’s only scope for one local actor.
But budding actresses could queue up to play his wives – either Thobeka, Nompumelelo, Gloria or Gertrude. There might also be room for our president’s ex – Nkosazana.
With a bit of luck, the characters might even be persuaded to play themselves. After all, the IFP’s Mangosutho Buthelezi famously starred in the British movie ‘Zulu Dawn’ in the 70s.
Apart from the main stars, there is an abundance of other colourful characters to choose from for the South African version of the series.
For example, the MP who stood up to tell Parliament recently that not all Europeans who set foot on these shores did so with good intentions – ‘like Jan van Riebeeck 2 000 years ago’.
An opposition party member rose on a ‘point of order’ and accused his colleague of ‘misleading the house’: “The honourable member is confusing Van Riebeeck with Jesus Christ,” he said to guffaws from the House.
Then there’s the Minister of Foreign Affairs who was more worried about seeing women carrying water on their heads in 2016 than the EFF’s Julius Malema threatening to wreak havoc on the country in the run-up to the August 3 elections.
The Minister scratched her head throughout the interview on Al Jazeera (in reference to a hole caused by carrying water on it as a child)..,. and so did the journalist who battled to understand what she was getting at.
What about the sex, one might ask?
Well, there’s the juicy story of the Western Cape leader of a party who was allegedly ‘set up’ by a spunky young girl who shared his bed on the way to a conference in Rustenburg.
The possibilities are endless.
