Butthead’s Beat: Forty-seven days to what?

The real political battle on the South Coast is within the ANC itself, between the 'Progressives' and the 'Forces of Change'. What or whom either faction represents is difficult for an outsider to figure.

HOW many prospective voters care (or dare) a ‘hoot’ for the DA in the forthcoming local government elections is anyone’s guess.

Even the guys in blue t-shirts probably can’t tell exactly who supports them when they man intersections up and down the coast with placards asking motorists to ‘hoot’.

It’s hardly a very scientific poll.

Firstly, many people might just be a tad too timid to honk their support in a country where it seems to be downright dangerous to be overly vocal.

After all, people have actually been ‘taken out’ in some areas for supporting the wrong guys.

Secondly, the ‘hoot’ might just be a case of road rage as South Coasters aren’t known to be the most courteous drivers in the world.

Thirdly, picture the scene: ‘Hoot!’ DA candidates doing duty quickly paste a smile on their faces and some nearly crick their necks as they whip heads around to see where or who the support is coming from.

False alarm. It’s just another taxi. Sigh. Smiles fade… again!

Nevertheless, hats off to those brave Hibiscus Coast candidates and supporters who compete with cup-wielding beggars for street space. But a personal opinion is that this campaign tactic seems somewhat lame in comparison to what other parties are doing.

Get with the times, guys. The coast would love to see the likes of Dave Watson, George Henderson, Doug Rawlins, Peter Naude and Leon Garbarde (the few I recognise) marching and toyi-toying.

Knees up Carole Potter! Burn a few tyres, guys. The flames and smoke always make for good press.

The ‘hoot’ placards just don’t cut it.

Jokes aside, the DA’s more peaceful approach and its track record in the Cape might well win new friends.

But, let’s face it, few will put good money on the ANC losing control of Hibiscus or Ugu municipalities after August 3.

However, what is most concerning is that the real battle seems to be taking place within the ruling party itself… where (possibly) sinister ‘manifestos’ and ‘agendas’ are only speculated upon through leaks to journalists who are embedded in the various media houses.

My sources tell me that there are two ANC factions: The ‘Progressives’ and the ‘Forces of Change’.

What or who either faction stands for is a mystery and this makes it very difficult for prospective new voters to make up their minds.

There are 47 days left to V-day.

Please guys, think of what’s best for the South Coast in general.

We want leaders who make a difference and not only those with friends in high places or those who support the ‘right’ faction.
