DEAR Editor,-
With the recent closure of Crags View Wild Care Centre and in my capacity of animal rehabilitator, I would like to thank the ‘behind the scenes’ people who assisted in ways most people are not aware of.
Veterinarians Dr Leon Bruggeman and Dr Sylvi Weiss, Dr Hugo Voigt and Dr Claire Norten, Dr Renier Delport, Dr Michelle Beukmann, the Mobile Vet at Glenmore and Dr Dave Watson – thank you for your time, for always being prepared to help any animal, for the advice, all of which was pro-bono, your actions gave these orphans a chance at life in the wild.
Liz Highcock is sincerely thanked for her dedication to the centre over the past nine years. Liz, who is in her eighties, travelled from Shelly Beach to Port Edward twice a week to cut up vegetables and handled all the administration and finances as well. When donations weren’t forthcoming, Liz funded food bills from her own pocket and even settled the centre’s annual audit bill without hesitation. Her unwavering love and loyalty to the centre and its animals was admirable.
Thank you to neighbouring farmer Mike van Rensburg, who, for many years, donated bananas to the centre each week. Your contribution helped to feed many animals.
Lynn Milton, who was prepared to share her knowledge and offer advice when I had no-one to help me. Thank you for always being available to listen and share your ‘trade secrets.’
To my stand-in who came to my aid when I was exhausted from being on duty from 4.45am in the morning until 1am the following morning, for months on end, thank you.
To the individuals, private donors and businesses who financially supported the centre for many years – your donations helped many orphaned and sick animals, who would not have a chance were it not for your kindness. To Michelle Pearson – thank you for all your help with the birds.
Thank you to all of these kind and considerate people from the animals and myself.
Lastly, I would like to appeal to the public to support Michelle. She can be contacted at 083 2466765 and needs all the help she can get, or she will end up closing like the centre.
