Track Torque: No time to relax at Spa

Rod Kinsey previews the Belgian Grand Prix.

SUMMER break is over for the Formula 1 drivers and it’s off to Spa Francorchamps for the super-fast Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.

Spa always sorts out the real men from the boys, as the extremely fast Eau Rouge (taken flat out, yet blind) and the very quick right and left handers which follow through the Ardenne Forest are not for the faint-hearted.

The great Belgian track has been in existence since the ’20s and almost always produces an exciting finish.

Changeable weather, where it can be raining on one portion of the track and dry on another, adds to the challenge and spectacle.

Mercedes should still be top dog with, as ever, an expected tough battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for a win.

The only teams perhaps capable of taking the chequered flag away from them are Ferrari and Red Bull.

Whether it will be Daniel Ricciardo or Max Verstappen at Red Bull who can take the challenge to Hamilton or Rosberg is an open question but at Ferrari I expect Sebastian Vettel to lead the Prancing Horse attack on the Silver Arrows machines.

There should be more improvements in the cars in the ever dynamic world of F1 so that we can expect a lot of new aero packages and maybe even some engine updates this weekend.

We can only hope for improved performances from Williams, McLaren and Toro Rosso while Force India should maintain its good showing so far this year.

Wet or dry, we can expect a spectacular race at this giant of a track!

Some of the performances here from the past that stand out have come from Hamilton, Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

I hope that we see our exciting youngster Verstappen add to this list on Sunday.

We are also now in the silly season when driver swaps and driver changes become rampant.

At the moment Jenson Button’s name is being mentioned regarding a possible move from McLaren to Williams.

If this does happen then, at McLaren, we might see Alonso joined by Stoffel Vandoorne.

Qualifying on Saturday starts at 2pm and the race on Sunday over 44 laps (308km) also starts at 2pm.
