DEAR Editor,-
In his inaugural address, new Ugu district mayor Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza raised fundamental points which require our collective wisdom and energy to protect and promote. Cllr Mnyayiza emphasised and called for a culture of selfless leadership for the benefit of the community. We must strongly promote this virtue to counteract self-enrichment, which impairs public trust and renders public institutions ineffective. The quality of local politics and whether local government improve lives will largely depend on the character of local leaders.
Hence, the mayor readily implored the clerics to forever pray for leaders to resist temptations of public office or sins of incumbency.
As citizens, we need to know that praying for leaders’ propriety while ignoring our own individual sins and temptations to bribe government officials when in error or in order to gain preference equals to hypocrisy.
Righteousness is a two-way process as leaders are a product of society.
Cllr Mnyayiza also challenged the private sector to improve government-business relations and to meaningfully invest in local communities. Failure to foster productive business-government relations means failure to solve urgent socio-economic problems.
Society needs government as much as business needs all of us.
Let’s work with Cllr Mnyayiza to expedite this Herculean duty of cultivating upright, progressive, transformative and collaborative leadership and thinking in order to accelerate socio-economic development in communities. We are all in this together and together we shall overcome.
