Track Torque: Forty plus 10 makes … 50!

Rod Kinsey reviews the US Grand Prix.

LEWIS Hamilton started the season with 40 grand prix wins under the belt. His win last Sunday in Austin, Texas makes it 10 so far this year.

He now has the magic half century of grand prix wins behind him. Only Alain Prost with 51 and Michael Schumacher with a fantastic 40 more than anybody else at 91, are ahead of Hamilton.

In Texas, Hamilton made a great start, leading easily from the getaway while teammate Nico Rosberg had his hands full with Daniel Ricciardo fighting hard with him for second spot.

Rosberg now leads Hamilton by 26 points with three races remaining.

Casualties at the start were Valtteri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg, who had a coming together, although Bottas managed to continue after pitting with a puncture.

This time around it was not to be a good race for the ‘super kid’ Max Verstappen, who went out of the race on the 29th lap with suspected engine problems.

From young to old but still very good… past double world champion Fernando Alonso gave us a wonderful display of talent and tactics in the battle for fifth place between him, Carlos Sainz Jr and Felipe Massa, which he won.

In fact, it was two old men teaching one young one some racing lessons. Great stuff!

Sebastian Vettel had a mixed day but always shows his talents and was briefly in the lead when the first round of pit stops came up.

He finished about 20 seconds behind Ricciardo, who had settled for third place behind Rosberg.

After Sainz and Massa in sixth and seventh places, came Sergio Perez in the sole remaining Force India.

The other McLaren Honda also had a good run with Jenson Button doing all that he could to finish ninth.

The HAAS team must have been very happy to see Romain Grosjean, 10th, in the final points position at their home race.

There is only a seven-day break before the next race in Mexico City, where we can expect exciting racing at a fast and challenging track.

It is the home of the late Rodriguez brothers, Pedro and Ricardo, and their spirit will be remembered this weekend.

We hope we can expect a feisty, spicy race with something different coming out of the new mix.

Qualifying is at 8.50pm on Saturday and the race starts on Sunday at 9pm.

Will matador Verstappen the Red Bull fighter win the hearts of the Mexicanos?
