OPINION: ‘These people need a special mention’

For Sister Florence and Nombuso Shude, this is not just a job, but seems to be a calling.

DEAR Editor,-

The newspapers are always full of doom and gloom, depressing stories and people always complaining about the negatives like no service delivery, potholes, dirty public toilets, dirty streets, and so on, and yes, they are fully justified because it is true.

But, allow me to just thank two special people, who I believe need a mention. My mother required surgery and was admitted to the Shelly Beach Day Hospital on October 24. After surgery she was discharged around midday and when I arrived to collect my mom in the surgical ward, I was greeted by the very friendly duo of Sister Florence Cembi and Nurse Nombuso Shude. They proceeded to show me how the drains needed to be emptied and Sister Florence raised concerns that she felt the drain inserted into my mom’s left breast was not functioning properly and needed attention.

She phoned Dr Danie Otto (who did the surgery) who arranged for us to go to his rooms in Margate. A follow-up procedure was done, but the drain would not stop filling up. That evening my mom ended up at Netcare Margate Hospital for observation and to stabilise the bleeding. She was discharged the next day.

Throughout that day and the next day, Sister Florence contacted me to check on my mother and whether she was doing better. This concern about her patients is very much appreciated and needs to be shared. For Sister Florence and Nombuso Shude, this is not just a job, but seems to be a calling. Once again thank you for your excellent service in caring for my mother.

To the night staff in surgical ward at Netcare Margate Hospital – a very big thank you for the efficient and friendly manner in which you cared for my mom. Thank you Sister Florence and Nurse Nombuso Shude.
