DEAR Editor,-
I was on my way to work one morning and as I approached the traffic lights at the Margate SAPS, an employee of a small business broke at least three laws. This is just one employee of one small business, but times that by at least 50 000 and you have a lot of laws being broken daily – and with impunity.
Imagine for a moment if I covertly told my staff to ‘do what you have to do’ to make money for me and then claimed innocence when they did by fair means, or in most instances, sadly, by foul.
Imagine if I as a business owner failed to pay PAYE, skills development levies, UIF, and a decent living wage and then turned a blind eye to my staff breaking every law ever put in place to, not only put themselves in danger, but also the very clients who keep me in the lap of luxury.
There is a strong possibility that not only would the Receiver of Revenue pay me a visit, but they would be joined by the SAPS, labour lawyers, trade unions, traffic police, etc. And do you know what? I would use that all encompassing excuse and justification. I would politely tell them to get lost, for you see, I would say I am a taxi owner. And that’s that!
