Butthead’s Beat: ‘Suidkus’ no better place to be

The entire Ugu South Coast is still paradise, warts and all. Be honest. Would you want to live anywhere else?

HOPEFULLY this isn’t true, but social media junkies can be forgiven for thinking that South Coasters are ‘glass half empty’ types of people.

Granted, there was panic (to put it mildly) last week when people had to go without water for days, mainly because some striking municipal workers took their protest action to a whole new sinister level and sabotaged the supply system.

About 100 000 people were affected. If our security serves do their jobs, the right heads will roll.

The real heroes of the situation were Ugu municipal manager DD Naidoo, his hierarchy and the ‘good’ workers, some of whom risked life and limb to restore the supply as soon as humanly possible. They just had to shrug off a barrage of insults from the public, some of them downright unfair, political and even racist.

Ward councillors and one Wessel Pretorius also did their best to keep people informed and certainly need pats on the back. Alas, some (no names no pack drill) could not resist using this crisis to earn some political capital and (a personal opinion) that did sour their heroic efforts somewhat.

However, with huge crowds expected to converge upon us from now on, the Herald thought it would be in order to do its own tour of the coast, this time with a ‘glass half full’ mentality.

Surprise! If one takes the time to look out for the positive things, the entire South Coast is just a wonderful place to be at this fine time of year.

There are issues for sure, but maybe it is just us, the residents of the ‘Slow Coast’ who have too much time on our hands to dwell on the ‘bad’ and we forget to enjoy the ‘good’.

One can take days to explore our gems – beaches, roadside shops, coffee plantations, restaurants, pubs, etc., etc. – stretching from the Wild Coast Sun right through to Scottburgh and inland to Oribi. Visit our web site: www.southcoastherald.co.za and search the ‘News, Lifestyle’ section to find out more.

However, there was one dampener when popping into the famous Mac Banana complex at Munster recently. It’s just crazy what they have done with the place and it’s a must on the holiday agenda.

Warning! If you are partial to pickles, preserves, cheeses and nuts, be prepared to leave much poorer than when you walked in.

The fridge at home is now packed. The problem now is, where does one store the beer?
