FOR the record, contrary to Councillor George Henderson’s suspicions, this column is not being written with help from any alcoholic beverage or any kind of hallucinogenic smoking substance.
This after Cllr Henderson’s response to last week’s column: “You must have been a long way into your beer reserves or smoking something.”
He was obviously somewhat irked by my suggestion that Ugu municipal manager DD Naidoo’s brave decision regarding striking workers probably saved the district from an absolute catastrophe.
Ward councillors and others were also praised in the column for their tireless efforts to keep afflicted residents and holiday people updated on the water supply crisis.
However, Cllr Henderson seemed to take great exception to a suggestion that efforts were soured somewhat by some for making political capital out of a crisis that affected everyone.
Cllr Henderson wasn’t named or singled out, but hey! If the cap fits…
I also suggested that the coast had lots of ‘glass half empty’ type people who tended to dwell on the ‘bad’ and did not see and enjoy all the ‘good’ things the coast offers.
Anyway, hopefully Mr Henderson (can I call you George?) and I will smoke a peace pipe (harmless stuff, of course) and have a more friendly debate over a cup of coffee (not beer) in the new year.
However, George certainly did instigate a tirade of insults against me when he shared my column on rather dubious sites favoured by some, well… not-so-polite people.
(By the way, I refer to myself as ‘Butthead’, mainly because people tend to mispronounce my first name, Bevis, and confuse me with the cartoon character, Beavis. But I admit I’m not above being an actual ‘butthead’ at times, like all humans.)
With regards to the insults, I’ll take them on the chin because I’m a true believer in ‘freedom of speech’. Without it, any democracy would crumble.
But I thought some of the more choice comments might be worth sharing, if only for a laugh:
I was accused of smoking ‘pot’, ‘my socks’, ‘serious stuff’, taking ‘happy pills’ and even ‘Tik’. My ‘head’s up my butt’, the ANC ‘censors the Herald’ (amazing as ANC MEC Ravi Pillay once accused us of being ‘DA agents’) and I’m ‘on a different planet’.
Some suggested I was paid by DD Naidoo and my ‘toenails can be seen coming out of his arse’.
Then I’m a ‘tosser’, ‘mad’, ‘bloody fool’, ‘poephol’ ‘belong in North Korea’ and, best of all… ‘on the Gupta payroll’!
Thank you, South Coasters, I’m truly flattered.
