OPINION: ‘Local businesses unfairly blamed for pollution’

Forget about Ugu looking for the source of the contamination and interview the doctors and hospitals to clear local businesses’ names.

DEAR Editor,-

This was the most disastrous season I have ever experienced in the 27 years of being in business on the South Coast. So much business was lost through cancellations because of customers, especially young children, getting seriously ill (Ugu urgently searching for source of Uvongo River pollution).

In some cases, extremely bad reports posted on social media placed the blame on the ‘health issues’ of the restaurants themselves! One quote from a customer states ‘300 children were treated at a local hospital in one week, including my own two.’

Forget about Ugu looking for the source of the contamination and interview the doctors and hospitals to clear local businesses’ names. Investigate the informal settlement area behind the Margate SPCA, which is on a run-off slope down to the Uvongo River. Take a drive and see for yourself – where does that sewage go?
