OPINION: ‘Airport needs urgent upgrading’

The check-in facilities are completely inadequate, allowing only one passenger or group to check in at a time.

DEAR Editor,-

Now that CemAir has provided a reliable air service between Margate and Johannesburg, it is time for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to renovate Margate Airport, as in its present condition it does not give a good impression of the Hibiscus Coast.

The interior is very dark, illuminated only by wall-mounted fluorescent tubes – which only serve to blind incoming passengers and certainly do not provide an adequate level of illumination. There are overhead lights installed, but they are never used.

The check-in facilities are completely inadequate for the holiday season travellers, allowing only one passenger or group to check in at a time. The desk used by the check-in clerk looks like it comes from Noah’s Ark (used to check the animals in) and I think he struggles to carry out his duties working in the semi-darkness, in a very small space.

A further concern is the lack of air conditioning in the terminal building, which would certainly make the passengers’ lives more comfortable as they struggle in a very confined space to retrieve baggage from the ‘manual carousel.’
