OPINION: ‘What is Ugu’s long-term plan?’

I think the people heading up the Ugu team are weak - with very little managerial and planning experience.

DEAR Editor,-

I refer to ongoing articles in the South Coast Herald.

Over the past few years, the South Coast has lost a lot of business and slowly the urge to buy property on the South Coast has diminished. Further, the South Coast is not always the preferred holiday destination because of year-on-year water problems.

Every year we experience water issues which remain unresolved – with one excuse after another from Ugu District Municipality.

The historical list of issues includes: No water pressure; no water in certain areas; salt in the water; water is not fit for consumption; burst pipes and semi-repaired pipes; no spare pumps available; sewage entering the sea because of faulty pumps or no available spares. All reasons why Margate lost its Blue Flag status.

We can list all these problems ad nauseum, but how does Ugu plan to solve these water issues in the long-term. Where is their ten-point plan going forward?

Please don’t say there is no money, because every month there are astronomical fixed charges collected on sewerage. What happens to these funds?

I think the people heading up the Ugu team are weak – with very little managerial and planning experience. Stop making excuses year after year and get down to some productive work.
