OPINION: ‘There is always money available for salaries’

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality exists for the benefit of its employees rather than to provide a service for the ratepayers.

DEAR Editor,-

A recent advertisement from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality asked for applications for the post of Head of Community Services with a remuneration package of up to R103 670 a month (negotiable) plus a performance bonus.

That is an enormous salary by anyone’s standards.

An analysis of the Draft Budget by the Ratepayers’ Association concluded that the RNM spent over 60 percent of its expenditure on people costs; an increase of over 12 percent on the previous year. The more you spend on people costs, the less you spend on materials and equipment.

Soon our councillors will tell us that there is no more money available to spend on repairs, but you can be assured that there is always money available for salaries. This is where most of our rates money is going.
