OPINION: ‘Give us a councillor who does care’

All councillors should be held accountable for how they spend their allowances.

DEAR Editor,-

I had a good laugh at Ward 1 councillor Dorica Mthuli’s response to the statement that she ‘goes into hiding’ and her subsequent response that she ‘was not mobile’ (SCH February 10).

MEC, it’s time for you not only to make her forfeit her salary, but hold a by-election in Ward 1 so that the ratepayers can get a councillor who is enthusiastic and uses the large monthly travel allowance (which they receive on top of their fat monthly salaries) to become mobile within all of their ward and one who cares about their ward and residents.

Dorica, if you can’t drive, then hire a car and driver to take you around your ward. Wonder if you even know the actual ward boundaries and how many streets or residents live in your ward? Oops – sorry I forgot you don’t even live in Ward 1, so why should you care?

Your travel allowance should be used to get into all areas of your ward to help residents and identify problems. You are then supposed to report these to the correct departments and until you get results and answers. You are supposed to follow this up on an daily basis.

But why should you work when others, out of desperation, are doing your job for you and spending their own hard-earned money to get try and get the basic services, which they pay for, while you sit at home?

MEC, take her salary and split it up amongst the different ratepayers associations, as they and their members are the only ones keeping Ward 1 afloat.

We are tired of having a councillor whose salary we pay, but who stays away, does not answer her cellphone (she gets an allowance for that too!) and adopts the ostrich with its head in the sand attitude.

All councillors should be held accountable for how they spend their allowances and not just use them to travel to council meetings. They should also have basic knowledge of how to use a computer and speak, read and write the official language used in council – English.

Enough is enough. We want a new councillor for Ward 1.
