OPINION: ‘Thanks for new lease on life’

I was able to go back at work a week earlier than scheduled!

DEAR Editor,-

This letter is dedicated to doctors David Chivers and Freek Coetzee at Hibiscus Private Hospital. I want to thank them for the perfect total knee replacement done during December 2016.

My left leg was broken above the knee from a motorbike accident in May 1982, leaving it shorter than the right.

My knee was  a total mess and at the time I was fine, but throughout the last four years I have barely been able to walk, even with the aid of crutches.

Lying in the High Care unit on the first day after my operation, I could already lift my leg.

I was transferred from High Care to a general ward shortly thereafter and on the second day I was able to get myself to the bathroom using crutches.

On day three, I was able to make my way to the reception where I totally surprised Dr Chivers who was looking at my X-rays. On the fourth day I was able to go home.

One week later, I was able to move around on crutches and by the third week, I was using only one crutch for support.

The pain was so well controlled that I never felt any and was able to go back at work a week earlier than scheduled!

A month after my operation, I was told that these two doctors had performed a knee replacement on an elderly woman (80), which was just as successful.

With confidence and full trust in my heart and God, I can honestly refer anybody to these two miracle doctors. Thank you for my new lease on life.
