OPINION: ‘Learning how to read between the lines’

The inefficiency and apathy of municipal workers is just getting worse every day.

DEAR Editor,-

Being an avid bookworm, I am very grateful that we have libraries at our disposal. Reading is food for my soul and helps me wind down and go to sleep at night.

When I visited the Uvongo Library at the end of January, I expected that the renovations had been completed since the doors were open. I assumed that everything was up and running and happily ventured inside.

No such luck! The place was an absolute mess with wall-to-wall books – and not where you would expect to find them. They were stacked all over the floor, on the reception desk – basically any space available.

I bit my tongue and began my hunt, but it was impossible to find anything with no referencing. Out of sheer frustration I eventually settled on three books I have read but didn’t mind re-reading.

Last week (almost two months later) I went to get some books, but was extremely exasperated to find that absolutely nothing had changed.

When I approached the desk, the two librarians sitting chatting and playing with their cellphones actually told me I could go ahead and find some new books!

The existing shelves were empty and there were many new shelves standing around – still in their plastic wrap. I really did try to find some reading material, but gave up.

I asked the librarians why it has taken months? The answer? “It is a big job.” When I asked how much longer it would take I was told “Another three months!” Why?

I asked whether I could use my Uvongo library card at the Margate Library and the reply was “Yes, but take your ID book and proof of residence so that they can issue you with a Margate Library card.” Why?

Why are the libraries not linked from one suburb to another? I despair. The inefficiency and apathy of municipal workers is just getting worse every day.

Are there any libraries that are actually still fully functional?
