OPINION: ‘Please clean up your town’

Please make some effort to see to all the negatives.

DEAR Editor,-

As you can see from my email it is 4am in the morning (May 20). I am a holidaymaker and have just seen that Margate has been nominated as a finalist for town-of-the-year in KwaZulu-Natal DStv’s KykNET’s Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar.

What an honour! But there’s only one problem – the prostitutes in your town. They have been up and down Marine Drive between Absa Bank and as far as Strelitzia and Seezight flats since 8pm last night – up to 4am on a Saturday morning.

They walk the street screaming like mad, so much so that nobody can get to sleep. I wonder what Kwêla would say about this? The good things said about Margate are true, but it’s all sugar-coated.

What about the prostitutes? It is a disgrace that where there once was a mini funfair is now an unsafe, drug-friendly haven for drug peddlers, addicts, drunks, to name a few.

Please make some effort to see to all the negatives. Your town is losing many tourists and holidaymakers because word spreads like wildfire as friends tell friends about the prostitutes, the crime and drug abuse in Margate.

Just as I will spread the word of the bad experiences my family and I have had to deal with. Please clean up your town.
