OPINION: ‘Strange fasting rules raise questions’

Perhaps an elder of the Nazareth Church could explain.

DEAR Editor;-

Declining a cup of tea, my domestic worker informed me that her church did not allow her anything hot on a Saturday. Strange, but not too much of a problem. Then she told me that, next month, she would not be allowed to eat eggs or chicken.

I’m not one to argue with anyone’s faith but I do believe in a healthy diet and the ban on eggs and chicken seems to me to be counter-productive. With pork a permanent no-no and the high price of beef, mutton and cheese, eggs and chicken are the only affordable animal proteins available to many people. So next month many of the congregation who should be eating a balanced diet, particularly those on ARVs, will go under-nourished.

Self-denial is good for the soul, they say, but I fail to see how robbing your body of essential nutrients is going to make you more likely to go to Heaven. On the other hand, it might just get you there sooner.

Perhaps an elder of the Nazareth Church could explain.
