OPINION: ‘Naysayers should appreciate what we have’

Why not wake up one morning and go and look for positives around you? You may be pleasantly surprised.

DEAR Editor,-

I read with interest, the negativity spewed by a few residents on our coast.

I have been fortunate enough to have been able to travel both the African continent as well as internationally and the one thing that strikes me always is when you chat to the locals of ANY city or town anywhere in the world, they seem to be negative about their own.

It is always such a joy to get back home to the coast from any travels and it is upon these returns that one always realises what a beautiful part of the world we live in.

I think, because we live here daily, perhaps we do not see the beauty of our home town and tend to focus on a pavement not mowed, or a drain not covered, or litter on the beachfront, but I can categorically state that there is not a single village, town or city in the world that ‘gets it all right all the time’.

It is human nature (especially as one gets older) to become more cynical about the new generation and find more to moan about – and I am not saying that we should all view our town through rose-tinted glasses and yes, we certainly have our challenges just like every town does, but why not wake up one morning and go and look for positives around you? You may be pleasantly surprised.

In my business (which is certainly not ‘going down the tubes’, as one letter writer called ‘Disgruntled’ assumes), I get to chat to many visitors to our coast and I can tell you that they absolutely LOVE Margate, return regularly and would love to come and live in our paradise.

People always mention how well Cape Town is doing. I am a regular visitor there too and all is not roses there either.

Don’t only measure Cape Town by the Victoria and Alfred waterfront or Table Mountain, but talk to a taxi driver en-route to the airport and you will learn about a different side of Cape Town.

And this goes for anywhere you visit in the world.

In conclusion then, these naysayers who love to drain people with their negative outlooks, do yourselves a favour and go and travel with open eyes and then come back home and appreciate what we have.
