DEAR Editor,-
A few weeks ago the South Coast Herald featured a front page article entitled ‘Cop jailed’ with regard to a police officer who had received a commendation earlier in the year from the station commander at Port Shepstone and was subsequently sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for killing two suspected drug dealers at a taxi rank.

This case has troubled me ever since I read about it.
I can understand that at times the SAPS know that a certain individual is guilty but do not have enough proof to sustain an arrest.
Surely there must be extenuating circumstances in this instance for this highly commended police officer to have a reduced sentence?
We desperately need police officers in place to deal with the tremendous drug trafficking rackets destroying our young people on the South Coast and the country.
