OPINION: ‘Irregular expenditure increase raises concern’

We cannot allow this wastefulness to continue.

DEAR Editor,-

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is shocked to learn that KZN municipalities’ irregular expenditure levels have increased from R1.60-billion in the previous year to R2.43bn.

This is a matter of serious concern. We are not happy at all about this situation, therefore this call for urgent action from the relevant authorities.

IFP is further making a call that management of all municipalities which obtained qualified adverse and disclaimer should be dealt with accordingly and those with potential to achieve unqualified reports should be placed under capacity building programmes.

Poor management regarding expenditure is the problem and CFOs and municipal managers must be held to account.

All these municipalities must provide implementable strategies that will deal with officials who contravene supply chain management policies and create unauthorised, irregular and fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

We cannot allow this wastefulness to continue. The billions already wasted could have gone a long way to deliver much needed basic services to the poorest communities in our province.
