OPINION: ‘Vet Renier is an exceptional asset’

The day Dr Delport decided to make the South Coast his home was the day that changed my animals’ lives forever.

DEAR Editor,-

The day Dr Renier Delport decided to make the South Coast his home was the day that changed my animals’ lives forever as, unbeknown to me, there was a series of unfortunate events that were to unfold.

My dog Casey was diagnosed with diabetes six months before Dr Delport’s arrival and was prescribed insulin injections once a day.

She was terribly ill at the time and the vet I had consulted advised that the best thing would be to euthanise her. As this was a decision not to be taken lightly I decided to get a second opinion and took her to Vet Hospital Port Shepstone, where I had the good fortune to meet Dr Delport.

After consultation he advised that there were no guarantees, but he would see whether she responded to treatment. He hospitalised her and amended her insulin dosage after careful consideration.

Casey responded well to the amended dosage and much to my delight, Dr Delport gave her a new lease on life and I had the privilege of having her with me for another four years – absolutely priceless!

In December 2016, my border collie Megan became ill and Dr Delport discovered a mass in her stomach. It turned out to be a cancerous lipoma, which after removal weighed an astronomical 1.95kg! Her chances of survival were slim, but by some miracle Megan managed to pull through and is still doing well.

In February 2017 my other border collie Jessica had a stroke. Her head was tilted at an angle, she experienced lameness in her right legs and was totally off balance.

Once again, under Dr Delport’s excellent care, and my meticulous following of Dr Delport’s rehabilitation instructions, follow-up consultations and medication, Jessica managed to pull through and recovered remarkably well – with hardly any visible aftereffects.

There have been numerous other scares throughout the years with my animals and Dr Delport and his team have been by my side every step of the way, treating them with the utmost care, compassion and dedication.

I am fully aware that there are no guarantees that an animal will survive an illness and sometimes there is nothing that can be done, but fortunately my journey with Dr Delport has been a happy one.

In my opinion, the South Coast is extremely fortunate to have such an excellent vet at their disposal and I am forever grateful that Dr Delport decided to make this his home. Thank you for your emotional and professional support Dr Delport – you and your team are exceptional!
