DEAR Editor,-
Marina Beach’s history goes back to the 1930s. When it was first marketed, the owners described the new township, made up of a farm plus additional Crown Land acquired at a public auction, as ‘the Honolulu of the Natal South Coast’.
The village has a wonderful history and, while I am familiar with some of the events, to write a comprehensive article I need input from Herald readers.

I am anxious to learn more about the once landmark Marina Beach Hotel, last owned by Cecila and Tom Chamberlain. Does anyone have any photographs of this former popular family-orientated hotel?
Does anyone know who bought the hotel from the Chamberlains? It stood empty for years until it was finally demolished about 20 years ago. Nothing has happened since – it is just an empty, deserted site.
The views from this large, elevated site are breath-taking. Can anyone explain why it has never been developed?
The Marina Beach Tearoom (now Mariner’s Restaurant) would have started operating in the 1950s. Does anyone have any early photographs or information going back to this time?
Back in the 1980s, Lyn Breedt will be remembered as the lessee who turned what had been a little tearoom into a popular restaurant.
If you are reading this Lyn, or if anyone can let me know how to get in touch with her, please contact me, as I know Lyn will have photographs and memorabilia.
Making contact with former resident Caroline Mitchell would be an extra bonus. She lived in the village for many years and her late husband, Bob, who served as chairman of the former local authority, played a pivotal role in both the administration and well-being of the village.
Finally, I remember seeing a photograph taken in 1941 of the Mitchell, Brand and Langeler families enjoying a Sunday morning outing at Marina Beach. It would be a lovely photo to publish, so if you can help, please scan and send as an attachment.
If anyone can help with research, they can do so by contacting me at cochrane@lantic.net. But, please remember, in order for me to access photos, they MUST be sent as attachments.
