DEAR Editor,-
While shopping at Pick n Pay Margate, my husband was approached by a young man who appeared to be such a lovely, gentle person, who told my husband that he had been held up and robbed of everything he had.
He said his name was Johnny and showed my husband an ‘Affidavit’ that stated he was in the South African Navy. He said he did not know what to do or how to get home to Newcastle, as his mother was expecting him.

My husband was heartbroken that such a lovely young man had endured such a dreadful experience. We could not offer him any money as my husband never carries cash around, however, he told ‘Johnny’ to hop in the car and we would take him to Port Edward but would stop at our home first to see if we had any funds to lend him. I spoke to him and he seemed wonderful.
We decided to withdraw some money at the ATM and help him get home on the understanding that he would pay us back via EFT, as we are pensioners and could not afford to just give money away. He said we must not worry as his mom ‘Pamela’ would be able to repay us as she works at Capitec Bank.
We gave him R700 and he reiterated that it would be repaid by his mom.
After he and my husband left, I phoned his ‘mom’ Pamela and asked her to get him to phone us when he arrived home as we were concerned that he would arrive home safely.
We should have known better. To date we have not had one cent paid back to us. They have had a enough time to repay the funds and have not done so. This has never happened to us before and I am so very disappointed, but being elderly, I like to retain the belief that there are still some honest and good people out there.
