OPINION: ‘Poorly equipped lifesavers risk their lives’

Flippers would definitely have helped them in the recovery process, but we were told that there was no money for flippers.

DEAR Editor,-

Residents of Ilanga Resort and Caravan Park in Banana Beach watched helplessly as a small child was washed out to sea on Friday, July 21. Lifesavers battled to get the child out as the sea was extremely rough on that day. They eventually managed to save the child’s life but, speaking to the lifesavers, we discovered that they do not have flippers!

Flippers would definitely have helped them in the recovery process, but we were told that there was no money for flippers. What good is having lifesavers on duty if they do not have the right equipment to save lives – since they are risking their own lives as well?
