DEAR Editor,-
The Democratic Alliance (DA) raises its concerns over the photo of Ronaldo Meyer (South Coast Herald, September 1). In the photo, Mr Meyer is seen to be wearing a DA T-shirt. However, in the article entitled ‘Meyer found guilty’ there is no mention of the DA.
The article references to Mr Meyer’s conviction on charges of animal cruelty.

Such a photo linked to the contents of the article can be perceived by members of the public to reflect poorly on the reputation of the DA. Of particular concern is that the party was not given the right of reply regarding the photo.
As the constituency head of the Democratic Alliance’s Ugu South Constituency, I can categorically confirm that Ronaldo Meyer is not a member of the DA in the Ugu South Constituency or KwaZulu-Natal.
To the best of my knowledge, Mr Meyer was a member of the DA in the Eastern Cape and the Alfred Nzo Constituency. As a federal party, membership is managed independently by each province.
I have forwarded this article related to Mr Meyer’s conviction to my colleague Sanele Magaqa MPL, the constituency head of the DA’s Alfred Nzo Constituency, for them to consider further action.
The DA condemns, in the strongest light, all forms of animal cruelty and abuse and is the only party that recognises animals as sentient beings and having the capacity to feel. Animal cruelty and abuse have no place in a modern democratic society as ours. We respect the authority of the courts and fully respect the verdict of the magistrate and the sentence given.
