OPINION: ‘Resorts sit with a frustrating dilemma’

We all know that we have two municipalities that aren’t pulling their weight and are chasing possible tourists or visitors away.

DEAR Editor,-

As we all know, tourism is the South Coast’s lifeblood and we have many people attempting to promote it, not just for the economy, but for job creation as well.

We also know that we have two municipalities that aren’t pulling their weight and are chasing possible tourists or visitors away.

My concerns about just two of the South Coast tourist destinations, namely Beaver Creek Coffee Estate and The Pont in Port Edward are:

– After taking the turn-off at the Port Edward traffic lights and travelling towards Beaver Creek, the state of the road is disgusting.

– Further on down to The Pont, the road is even more disgusting. Trying to get some authority to rectify this situation is like flogging a dead horse.

– The loss of a water supply at The Pont is a continual battle and sometimes there is no water for days.

– As the Umtamvuma River level rises, it causes damage to The Pont resort, as well as the sewage system. Once again, attempting to get some authority to rectify this situation or breach the river mouth is like flogging a dead horse.

– The Pont had a lovely, visible sign at the turn-off from the road to Beaver Creek to attract visitors, but they were made to remove it.

With the ‘Matat2Pont’ motor cycle event, how on earth are our resorts supposed to cater for these visitors under these conditions?

We are attempting to attract tourists, but how are we supposed to do this, if we have to remove signage and expect visitors to travel on sub-standard roads to get to these destinations?

Owners of The Pont resort are spending a huge amount of money to upgrade, refurbish and improve all amenities in an effort to provide a lovely holiday destination – so may I ask why our municipalities do not come to the party and assist with this attempt to attract holidaymakers and tourists and not to drive them away?

There are many more resorts and venues facing the same dilemma.
