OPINION: ‘A thorough investigation is required’

The association offered to enlist the assistance of retired engineers to help municipalities overcome water problems and pothole repairs - free of charge - to no avail.

Dear Editor

For far too long we ratepayers on the South Coast have tolerated very poor service delivery by our municipalities. The latest water debacle calls for firm positive action on the part of us, the ratepayers.

On many occasions, the KZN South Coast Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (KZN SCRRA) has offered to enlist the assistance of retired engineers to help municipalities overcome water problems and pothole repairs – free of charge, but for reasons beyond comprehension, these offers have been declined. (Could it be to ensure their ‘comrades’ obtain lucrative perpetual contracts?)

What I would like to suggest is that John Irven, chairman of KZN SCRRA, establish a ‘commission of enquiry’ to investigate and recommend ways to find a solution to these problems and we as ratepayers ensure that they are carried out.

The commission must be granted access to CVs of department heads and whatever else they require by way of ‘information’ and that Mr Irven appoints whoever he considers necessary to constitute the commission.

We the ratepayers are the employers, not the employees, of the municipalities and this is our right.
