EVERYONE knows that there are countless crooks out there just waiting to steal the clothes off your back… and stick a sharpened screwdriver through your ribs just for good measure.
However, a real knife through an entire community’s heart is when people employed to serve ‘steal’ our water, either by not doing their jobs properly or by sabotaging supply systems, as many suspect.
The whole situation literally stinks, as scores of thousands have had to go unwashed for nearly two weeks in some areas now.

What the heck is really going on out there? Municipal manager DD Naidoo is on record as saying that sabotage could well be a factor, but why do pipes pop with such regularity that one could get a squirt up the skirt merely walking through the ‘burbs’?
There’s no disputing that our current network of pumps and pipes have passed their flow-by date and were not installed all those years ago with masses of people in mind. After all, ‘those’ guys were relegated to areas off the grid and left to scrounge for water on their own.
Shameful indeed! One has to give credit where it’s due and Ugu District Municipality has made inroads into piping water to many more communities in the past 23 years or so, but somebody miscalculated somewhere and now we are all paying the price.
It’s not just about going dirty or thirsty, but letting agents have reported that there is a very real threat of the festive season being a flop for the second time. Why risk coming down here on holiday if taps are dry?
There’s so much good marketing going on behind the scenes by Ugu South Coast Tourism, enthusiastic individuals, community organisations and the Herald is harnessing the might of its parent company, Caxton, with more than 120 other local newspapers and their respective online offerings that enjoy a collective 13-million plus ‘page views’ per month.
All this will be for naught if there is no assurance from Ugu that: “There WILL be water”.
What might encourage some positive comment on the gripe sites for a change would be if the alleged saboteurs are arrested and paraded in the courts for all to see.
Lock these ‘Grinch-people’ up and then submit them to Chinese water torture. That involves the culprits being tied down and water left to drip, drip, drip on their heads.
Maybe then these selfish few will get a taste of what the rest of us are going through.
