OPINION: ‘Will our taps ever spew water again?’

It is now 16 days without water. I have called the call centre so many times that I have lost count.

DEAR Editor,-

I have not had water since September 26. I have had to buy bottled water for drinking and cooking and there is very little water for bathing and other ablution activities. I am not fortunate enough to have a tank for water so I have to catch rainwater from gutters in a container for bathing, etc.

Water tankers and trucks come during the day when I am at work or late in the evening. There is no static tank near where I live. I believe the nearest one is at the Marburg Library, which is very far from where I live. It is ridiculous to walk all the way there to get one five-litre bucket of water.

As at the time of writing this report about my experiences during the water crisis (September 30), I still do not have water. It is now 16 days without water.

I have called the call centre so many times that I have lost count and have so far spent over R700 in airtime calling the centre to report no water and to find out when we will get water, but to no avail.

I called this morning (October 1) at 5am and held on for over 25 minutes before ‘Priscilla’ answered my call, only to say they are still looking for the problem.

I have spent so much time, money and effort reporting the prolonged water outage and I still do not know if I will ever get running water in the taps again!

I am 55 years old with knee and ankle problems and am expected to haul water from water pipes using a jug when it rains! This is very sad indeed and a violation of my basic right to a supply of

clean, interrupted water!
