OPINION: ‘Electricity tariff increase is a huge shock’

Why should ‘Joe Citizen’ pay for the incompetence of state structures?

DEAR Editor,-

The news that Eskom is seeking a 19 percent tariff increase from government is indeed another nail in the coffin of a nation tottering on the brink helplessness. This ‘milking cow mentality’ has put a strain on people who already cannot even afford the bare necessities.

With corruption rife from the top, the infighting in the hierarchy of the ANC, the fragmentation of its base structures such as the KZN ANC Youth League and the fracas that brought chaos and mayhem in Eastern Cape last weekend, the question must be asked: Why should ‘Joe Citizen’ pay for the incompetence of state structures?

If government and, in turn, the treasury, can ‘prop’ up SAA with billions to stave off bankruptcy, why on earth does the same yardstick not apply?

The general public is being duped into submission as bewilderment in state capture has numbed the grey matter of the masses. That is the shame of it all in this once-beautiful country.
