DEAR Editor,-
I read Shona Aylward’s article about the recent ‘Mother of all storms’ with interest. I am sorry for the damage Shona suffered and hope that there was no more by the next morning.
Wrought iron furniture on my bedroom balcony was blown about, thankfully without smashing the sliding door or windows. The sliding doors were creaking in the wind and if you touched them you could feel them flexing.

My brave German hunting dog was sitting next to me in my study, shivering. He is not normally allowed upstairs because he would take over my bed and TV remote control!
At approximately 8.30pm when the electricity was finally restored, I took the hound downstairs to his bed and made some dinner. Upon returning upstairs I hit a puddle of water in my stairwell from a leak that a local contractor had been paid to repair on four previous occasions.
The dinner tray went in one direction and I in the other. I slowly slid down the stairs and lay on the carpet for about an hour while regaining my senses. Eventually I crawled upstairs through the debris and went to bed.
When I awoke the next morning I found my top pillow soaked in blood and the right side of my body covered in black, purple, green and yellow bruises.
I sustained two cracked ribs. There’s no cure for that – just don’t laugh or cough! I’ve broken enough ribs from inelegantly falling off dirt bikes to know that. I subsequently spent two and a half days in bed recovering from concussion.
I have since learnt to put the ‘searchlights’ on in my stairwell at night before venturing anywhere near it.
