OPINION: ‘Justice must be done … and seen to be done’

I think that for our authorities ‘a little while’ is now past and they have been unable to strike the rock and bring forth water.

DEAR Editor,-

The reading in church for last Sunday’s service was most appropriate for us: Having fled from the Egyptians the Hebrews felt that they were stranded in the desert. Exodus 17: verse 3 reads ‘Give us water to drink’. ‘But the people thirsted there for water and grumbled against Moses’. Verse 4: Then Moses cried out to the Lord ‘What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me.’

I think that for our authorities ‘a little while’ is now past and they have been unable to strike the rock and bring forth water.

I believe that stoning of people is barbaric in these times and I suggest that we will have to be satisfied with dismissal. But justice must be done and seen to be done.

I trust that the Herald will stay right on top of the ‘water debacle’ and advise who has been fired and who has fallen on their swords.

Please make public the names and positions of those who are summarily dismissed and then the names of those more senior people who are relieved of their positions because of incompetence.

I don’t think it necessary to repeat the inconvenience to householders, loss of income to businesses, loss of turnover to the region and loss of reputation and prestige to holiday resorts, but some are responsible for the disgraceful service and they must pay with the loss of their jobs. Or perhaps they would prefer stoning to hide their disgrace?
