DEAR Editor,-
We had no electricity on Sunday, October 29 until about 9pm; no warnings, Eskom just turned off the switch at will. On Monday, October 30, we had no water from 6am. Once again Ugu just closed valves and there was no water.
On the internet, the Ugu District Municipality public notice states November 1, from 8am till 4pm (8 hours) shutdown and the same for November 14th, except for that period it will be for 6 hours (8am till 2pm). Strangely they turned the water off at 6pm and not 8am on the wrong date, but that’s their prerogative.

I stupidly tried to phone Eskom’s many emergency numbers on Sunday and the one listed by Ugu goes to a message that informs the caller ‘the number you have dialled does not exist’.
I remember the golden days when I first came to live in Uvongo – we had roads with no potholes, we had water every day, perhaps a few short hours of no electricity now and again. Pavements were mowed often and post was delivered to post boxes every day.
That was 21 years ago. It was heaven. People could walk on beaches and along beachfront roads on their own, even females!
Nobody had to watch if anyone was in the vicinity while opening driveway gates and customers weren’t scared leaving banks after withdrawing cash. People were all friendly and wanted to help each other.
I feel sad for those who have come down to retire full of great expectations that it’s going to be so much better than living in fear of crime and poor service in big bad cities.
The South Coast has become a place full of empty shops, bad service and dangerous beaches and roads. Keep hiding behind locked doors and don’t trust anyone.
