DEAR Editor,-
Last weeks’ launch of the National Cervical Cancer Prevention Policy (NCCPP) and the Breast Cancer Prevention and Control Policy saw numerous promises from KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo when it comes to the treatment of cervical and breast cancer in our province, with the unveiling of new testing and treatment procedures.

While this new technology is welcomed by the DA, the fact is that ongoing delays in treatment are still causing cancer patients to lose their lives. This is what the MEC should be dealing with first.
The DA has, on numerous occasions, asked MEC Dhlomo to tell us how long it will take for patients who are screened and found to have cancer to actually receive curative treatment.
We have also asked for timelines on when KZN cancer patients will again have access to a functional oncology service.
The MEC could not answer us. Instead he has resorted to attempts to ridicule and insult us when what he should have done was resign after the South African Human Rights Commission found him guilty of violating cancer patients’ rights almost six months ago. The only option that remains is for KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu, to fire him.
It is increasingly obvious that there is no accountability left under this ANC run government and it must be punished in 2019. The DA remains committed to pursuing this matter until such time as patients’ lives are placed first.
