DEAR Editor,-
On November 18, over one million people took to the streets of Zimbabwe’s major cities in protest against the continuation in office of their oppressive president, Robert Mugabe.

During this massive day-long protest, not one tyre was set alight, not one school or library or government building was burned, not one car vandalised and not one shop or business window was smashed. No looting took place – not even from unmanned market stalls or those of street vendors.
On November 21, the people of Zimbabwe once again took to the streets in their hundreds of thousands, rejoicing at the news that their president had finally resigned.
Again, no violence or lawlessness whatsoever occurred throughout the entire night as Zimbabweans of differing ideologies, political persuasions, colours and creeds joined hands in peace, unity and jubilation to celebrate this momentous event.
It seems to me that the people of South Africa who rise up in unbridled anger whenever they protest and commit acts of senseless violence and vandalism might, instead, look to their northern neighbours to learn how effective a genuinely peaceful protest can be.
