DEAR Editor,-
I find it very strange and have been struggling to come to terms with the recent ‘Best of South Coast’award given to Municipal Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu on behalf of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. We are told this is a ‘Readers Choice’ award from Hibberdene to Port Edward.

On opening your excellent local paper every week, what seems to be the recurring theme is lack of service delivery: complaints about potholes, streetlights, no stormwater drains, illegal littering, and so on. This is not including ratepayers’ organisations and individuals who constantly harass municipal departments to obtain basic services, which they say they bought and paid for through rates and taxes. I know this because, as the caucus whip for the DA, I see the daily frustration of ward councillors and PR councillors who do their best to assist desperate citizens from all walks of life.
The rural areas in this municipality do not fare any better, with roads you can’t travel on, very little or no security lighting, questionable sanitation practices and illegal dumping that is frightening and dangerous – the list goes on.
So who exactly voted for this award for the municipality? I am genuinely interested.
STEPHANIE BREEDT
DA Councillor
