OPINION: ‘What happened to the ‘Gem of the South Coast’?’

Over the last few years the area has decayed beyond anything I have seen in my lifetime.

DEAR Editor,-

For over 30 years I have been visiting Port Shepstone and the surrounding South Coast. I actually consider myself a ‘local’ as I grew up exploring the rocks at Tweni beach all year round and still today continue to return to this beautiful coastline all year round.

The South Coast is an absolute gem, but it has becoming very evident and sad that over the last few years the area has decayed beyond anything I have seen in my lifetime.

Roads are full of potholes, grass is not cut, buildings are decaying, trees and bushes are not pruned or kept neat and tidy, litter lies strewn all over the streets, beach areas are not maintained and have become unappealing,

river debris and garden refuse litter and the like are spoiling the once pristine beaches I grew up on.

Port Shepstone CBD has become run down and uninviting and roads, venues and shopping centres cannot cope with traffic volumes.

What has become of the ‘Gem of the South Coast’? Where is the pride? Where has the beauty and attractiveness gone?

This December, the area will be flooded with visitors from around the country, but sadly I do not see any beauty anymore.
