OPINION: ‘Getting answers is hard labour’

It is now two years since my objection was submitted and to-date I have received no feedback.

DEAR Editor,-

The fact that I have resorted to writing to the Herald should indicate how frustrated, disappointed and angry I am. I hope this letter can open the eyes of those higher up at the Department of Labour so that they can see what people go through because of lazy staff members who do not do the work they are paid for, but still collect a big fat pay cheque at the end of the month.

I was involved in an IOD (Injury on Duty) and lost the fingers on my right hand (I am right-handed). After four years they paid me a measly R50 000 and immediately after I submitted an objection, given the fact that it was my right hand and all my qualifications I have, require me to use my right hand.

However, when the claim was calculated, this was not taken into consideration, as well as the fact that I am the breadwinner at home with children to support.

It is now two years since my objection was submitted and to-date I have received no feedback.

I had to travel as far as Durban to follow up on my claim and was assisted by Ernest Simelane, who told me that they did not calculate the loss of my index finger, nor had they even submitted my documents.

Thankfully I had taken my own copies. I had to make hundreds of calls to the head office – only to be told that they will check my claim and get back to me. I’m still waiting.

I am sick and tired of begging for what is rightfully mine.
