OPINION: ‘Blue flags’ on beaches are misleading’

A red or black flag beach status should be introduced to warn the public about its less than acceptable status.

DEAR Editor,-

I fail to see how Hibberdene beach is classified as a ‘Blue Flag’ beach? As a resident of Hibberdene, I frequent this beach almost daily and the public toilets are absolutely disgusting and cannot be used by the public and holidaymakers.

The beaches are not cleaned on a regular basis and there is absolutely no control on drunken ‘parties’ on the beach, even when law enforcement is present. Last Saturday (16th), I personally witnessed a female law enforcement officer being physically pushed by a teenager who was so drunk that he was not able to walk, yet nothing was done to stop this unacceptable behavior.

Later that evening, a man was also stabbed after two of these drunk youths ended up in a fight.

And this on a road used by locals and holidaymakers to walk to the beach!

My recommendation is that a red or black flag beach status be introduced to warn the public about its less than acceptable status and that the blue flag status is removed immediately – until such time that this area is brought to the required standards.

Facilities are not the only things that should be rated and public safety should be paramount in the criteria used to rate a beach.
