OPINION: ‘Glossing over the truth is insulting’

If ‘it’s not so bad’, why doesn’t Tourism face the many disillusioned visitors who want to pack their bags?

DEAR Editor,-

With reference to last week’s article entitled ‘Taps will flow, Ugu assures’.

The powers that be have been blowing air about how water will flow, well, it is day five for Pumula residents and our taps don’t even blow air!

Ugu has clearly shown its disrespect for this area with excuse after excuse after excuse – treating us like children and brushing our crisis aside, as if it’s their right. Our right is to expect basic services.

And to crown it all, they further insult us by demanding payment for water ‘supply’. So, I ask with tears in my eyes, WHO pays for the thousands of litres of bottled water?

And the many JoJo Tanks that have had to be installed? And those poor senior citizens who have no means of collecting buckets? Who?

It’s an absolute disgrace, the insult compounded by Ugu South Coast Tourism’s claim that ‘it’s not so bad, most accommodation establishments have made ample provision for any possible misfortune.’ What about the residents who live with this fiasco?

Regular press releases by the CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism are further insults – being creative with the truth. Who does he think he’s fooling?

If ‘it’s not so bad’, why doesn’t Tourism face the many disillusioned visitors who want to pack their bags?

They’re as bad as Ugu Municipality and have no idea of what’s happening – that there are actually hundreds of cancellations; long-standing residents placing beloved properties on the market; people’s livelihoods seriously threatened by incompetence and it is all covered up by the very departments entrusted with our well-being.

So we now have a new motto: ‘Sunny South Coast, the place to avoid’. Paradise? Not anymore. Absolutely heart-breaking.

FED-UP PUMULA RESIDENT
