OPINION: ‘Misdirected blame will not fix the decline’

The ANC needs to clean up its act in council.

DEAR Editor,-

I refer to the leading letter in last week’s edition entitled ‘Three cheers for caring councillor Selvan Chetty’ from ‘Observant Resident.’

Without wishing to distract in any way from the value of any good works, the suggestion by your correspondent that ‘we know’ that Umtentweni would be ‘in a much better state’ with an ANC councillor, adds a political taint that not only detracts from the implied altruistic motives for Councillor Chetty’s labours, but insults the intelligence of readers.

In fact, what ‘we know’ is that the unkempt state of the whole South Coast is a consequence of the ANC’s dereliction of duty.

Councillors should be dealing with the ANC’s massive maladministration in council, not weeding a neglected verge in a prime location of Umtentweni prior to the tourist season.

The ANC is paid to do that job. The rampant decline of the entire South Coast in the hands of the ANC cannot be remedied by suggesting that the DA opposition is responsible. The ANC needs to clean up its act in council. Patently ridiculous scapegoating is no substitute for that.
